Institutional Welcome

Mallorca is once again at the world epicentre of tourism with the third edition of the Sustainable Destinations Summit, which will take place on 16 and 17 October at the Hotel Zoëtry Mallorca.

Over the course of these two days, and within the framework of this international forum, dozens of national and international experts who are already leading numerous initiatives on a global scale will offer the keys and the latest news on the best practices in environmental, social and economic sustainability, which are being developed all over the world thanks to their knowledge and experience.

We are at a key moment in our tourist history, with an unprecedented challenge, which is none other than to manage tourist flows in order to promote a real and effective coexistence between our visitors and also our citizens, the residents of Mallorca.

The current situation on the island and in other destinations is so crucial that meetings such as the one we are going to attend thanks to this international forum will serve to continue with the roadmap that the Consell de Mallorca began just over a year ago and which will allow us to continue taking firm steps towards this coexistence. All with the aim of continuing to lead tourism as we have done so far.

At the Consell de Mallorca we have always worked and promoted a real coexistence between residents and tourists, within a framework of sustainable development of tourist activity, a desire shared with the whole of society, which we have incorporated into our decision-making, a basic axis in our decisions, which will mark all the policies of the institution.

In this new stage we have embarked on a new tourism course that is committed to responsible tourism, with a commitment (Commitment to Responsible Tourism in Mallorca), to which international organisations, employers’ associations, some thirty municipalities, airlines and tour operators have adhered, which aims to promote responsible tourism on the island, always in the interests of coexistence.

We are very proud that tourism is the main economic engine of Mallorca. A sector that for decades has generated opportunities, wealth and well-being in our land. Therefore, now is the time to demonstrate our commitment to continue being world leaders in sustainable and responsible tourism.

The holding of this Sustainable Destinations Summit is a clear example of our potential and thanks to it the island is once again at the world epicentre of the sector.

Many thanks to the organisation and the professionals for making it possible and my wish that both attendees and speakers can enjoy two intense and enriching days.

Llorenç Galmés Verger
President of the Consell de Mallorca.
